Cisco Umbrella - Cloud DNS Security Gateway and Application Control

How Does it Work?

Umbrella internet gateway secures your business against malware, phishing and ransomware. Umbrella is well suited to businesses from 1 to 10,000 members of staff, safeguarding organisations from every size. The solution is also very easy to use and configure, with limited complexity and immediate results.

Your business uses an application called “DNS” to lookup the addresses of domain names (e.g. google.com). DNS resolves the addresses of legitimate websites, but it can also be used to connect your users (or malware) to high risk websites, e.g. badwebsites-21321.org. Umbrella screens your DNS traffic, neutralises threats and alerts you to anomalous behaviour that may indicate a breach.

What is an Internet Gateway?

Umbrella acts as a gateway between the internet and your business systems and data to block malware, botnets and phishing over any port, protocol or app, and also detect and contain advanced attacks before they can cause damage. Umbrella discovers and blocks malicious domains and IP addresses before antivirus vendors or reputation systems identify them, and often before an attack is launched.

Key Features

Layered Defence
The Umbrella solution works best when implemented as part of a wider enterprise security strategy. Configuring your firewalls to only allow DNS traffic through Umbrella provides a secure conduit, and immediately identifies exceptions. Umbrella also works seamlessly alongside your existing endpoint protection (AV) and content filtering solutions.

It is considered best-practice to layer-up your security, and Umbrella provides an additional layer to improve your security posture.

Simple Deployment
By just pointing DNS to us, security is simple to deploy. By enforcing security in the cloud, Umbrella is easy to manage. No hardware to install. No software to maintain. Nothing you need to update.
Enterprise Integration
The Cisco Umbrella service can integrate with your existing Active Directory organisation. Real-time and historic activity links to your Active Directory Domain, providing per-user activity and threat reports. An easy to use VMWare VM template (OVF) is available for straight forward deployment and management.
Stop botnets from stealing your data
Investing in security with the hope of having 100% prevention is ultimately impossible. A determined attacker will always find a way to install malware onto at least one system. One of Umbrella’s most valuable capabilities is its security visibility into infected devices botnet activity (connecting to “command & control” servers). By containing botnet callbacks and identifying which attacks are targeting your business, the service will help protect your business from breaches.
Predictive Intelligence
Leverage up-to-the-minute perspective and analysis of 2% of the world’s Internet activity to stay ahead of attacks. Enhance your threat intelligence by seeing where attacks are being staged on the Internet.
Anti-Fraud
Today’s targeted spear phishing can fool even trained security professionals. And despite programs to make employees aware of best practices, they still use the same passwords to access corporate apps. Umbrella operates a service known as PhishTank, the first and most successful collaborative clearinghouse for phishing information on the Internet. Alongside Phistank, Umbrella use big data analytics to predict where phishing sites will emerge
