Last year, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) launched a wide ranging consultation into cloud computing (the consultation and the responses are available on the TRAI website). The TRAI consultation looked to discuss issues such as regulation, privacy, cross-border data flows and jurisdictional oversight.
Manx Technology Group (MTG) is an active contributor and follower of developments in cloud computing, particularly in relation to cross border data flows, data protection, data sovereignty and how these issues impact global value chains. Consultations such as those undertaken by the TRAI, whilst focused on India – are globally relevant.
MTG responded to the consultation. Our consultation response can be viewed here.
The Isle of Man
You may then wonder why MTG, an Isle of Man headquartered company, has an interest in a regulatory ‘cloud’ discussion that was taking place 7,000KM away in New Delhi? MTG work with a number of business partners who service the Indian market, have a presence in India or whose operation has India featuring as part of their value chain.
For those who do not know, the Isle of Man is located within the British Isles and has a reputation as a world class international business centre. The business environment and the Government serve as a catalyst for many organisations who choose to operate globally and need access to international markets.
Whilst many countries grapple with the challenges around cloud, data, data sovereignty, taxation, security and the ‘value’ of data, the Isle of Man has an opportunity to emerge as the beacon of regulatory clarity, jurisdictional certainty and with a robust framework of controls that ensure the highest levels of data security and integrity.
We believe that these data concepts and a global outlook, a fit for purpose legal system, relevant and progressive ‘data’ legislation and the existing business environment – make the Isle of Man an excellent location for international businesses where data is an integral part of their operation or business model.
The reasons above will explain why MTG felt it needed to submit a response to the TRAI’s consultation. Not only to participate in the debate but to do our part to promote the Isle of Man on the world stage. The MTG response to the consultation (submitted by Joe Hughes – CEO of MTG) is available on the TRAI website (here) alongside responses from organisations such as Microsoft, Verizon, Symantec, Ericsson and Oracle.
MTG is committed to international partnerships and collaboration, and is continually looking at ways to grow our international business network. We also firmly believe that the Isle of Man has a key role to play in the emergence of the global data economy, particularly when it comes to identifying and resolving many of the ‘data’ challenges faced by governments and organisations alike.
