Unified Communications (UC) has a place in healthcare

Unified Communications is considered one of the top IT investments for European Healthcare Providers in 2015.

Unified Communications (UC) solutions are one of the most widespread communication technologies used in business today. UC platforms integrate voice, video, instant messaging, e-mail and voicemail into a seamless communications platform. It is no coincidence how the UC market is set to exceed $75 billion by 2020. A new survey from IDC Health Insights found European healthcare providers are rapidly looking to adopt Unified Communication solutions. UC was listed as one of the top IT investment areas alongside other general collaboration systems and EHRs (electronic healthcare records).

The gradual transition towards integrated healthcare delivery means the IT investment priorities of healthcare providers are also having to change. This change in investment strategy and the realignment of healthcare IT budgets demonstrates how a change in business model often leads to a change in technology investment.

The survey also touches upon how there is  a gradual convergence of enterprise business solutions and healthcare industry-specific solutions. This comes as no surprise; business intelligence (BI), analytics, mobile and cloud are commonplace, but are now enablers in the healthcare digital transformation.

On the path to becoming a digital enterprise, healthcare IT executives still need to fully realize that collaboration and information-sharing platforms need to be supported by an information management strategy to deliver significant improvements. Healthcare provider CIOs need to architect wider patient information sharing and use, supporting a patient-centric care delivery model based on patient data integration, collaboration, broader and different uses, and analysis.”
